How to use this tip calculator

Even split is for the standard case. Enter the bill amount, pick a tip percentage, and use the +/- buttons to set the number of people. The "per person" amount updates instantly. Custom split is for when people ordered different amounts. Enter what each person ordered and the calculator will split the tip proportionally to each person's share.

How much should I tip?

In the US, standard restaurant tipping is 15% to 20% on the pre-tax subtotal. 18% is the default in many cities and is widely considered the new baseline for sit-down service. 20% or more is for excellent service. Coffee shops, takeout, and counter service typically warrant 0-15%, depending on the situation. For delivery, 15-20% on the food total (separate from any service fee) is standard. For bartenders, $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab is typical. International tipping varies widely. Many European countries include service in the bill and a small round-up is sufficient. Japan and several other Asian countries don't tip at all.

How custom split works

Each person's tip is calculated proportionally to what they ordered. If one person had a $50 steak and another had a $10 salad on the same check, with a 20% tip the steak person pays $60 and the salad person pays $12. This is more fair than splitting evenly when the orders are very different. The total still adds up to the same as splitting evenly across the table. It's just allocated based on what each person ordered.

FAQ

Should I tip on tax? Most etiquette guides say no, tip only on the pre-tax amount. In practice many people tip on the post-tax total, which adds a few percent. This calculator uses whatever number you enter, so enter the pre-tax subtotal if you want to be precise.

How do I handle a service charge that's already on the bill? If the bill already includes a service charge or auto-gratuity (common for groups of 6+), don't add additional tip. Enter the bill amount excluding the service charge, set tip to 0%, then mentally add the service charge back. Or just enter the full bill amount with the service charge included and use 0% tip.
